A note on Ethiopian cuisine. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones and Wales is of course not internationally acclaimed for “Welsh Rarebit” and “Welshcakes” but the Ethiopian national dish of Injera takes a little bit of getting used to. Injera kind of resembles greyish green camera protection foam and tastes a little of sour sweat. On this pancake size piece are added various runny liquids of amazing colours and is then eaten with your hands with no cutlery. We tried it for the first time at the “Mini Fogera Restaurant” in Gondar. Reactions were mixed, Polly loved it (She does enjoy her food) I quite liked it. Everyone else gave it a thumbs down. The waiter could see the kids were struggling without cutlery so thoughtfully came over and asked the kids “You like fuck?” …..”Yes, a FORK would be very helpful!” We have all put our minds to what else we could use it for and have come up with such diverse ideas as insoles to rugby players shoulder pads. The other problem with Ethiopian food is that about 140 days a year are “fasting” days when menus are restricted to very bare fare indeed. Role on meaty Kenya.
