Diary In Maun (not sure if you say Mmmmmaaaaaaaauuunnnnn, or Mau-n, but am working on it) and are off to visit the frightening Okivango Delta and Chobe National Park. I say frightening as I enquired about lodges and camping and was quoted up to $1800 (£1000) per person per night (and that is camping!)…..looks very much like we’ll be sleeping in our Land Hovel then. Who can afford to pay those prices? Must be out of work millionaires or people like that. The Land Rover with no name is starting to get a little pissed off with me as I sort of promised him easier roads from Malawi on, but it really hasn’t turned out like that. Bob Dylan sang “ How many (dirt) roads must a 4x4 drive down, before you call him a Land Rover?” and I keep thinking that there must be some limit to how much punishment one vehicle can take before something major decides to call it a day…. I know Land Rover with no name is a youngster, but it’s had a rather different life to most…I keep saying “not far now lad” but I feel I’ve lost all credibility and I really don’t know whether he believes me anymore. Now “only” 27000 miles on the clock and “just run in”, but at least 15000 of those miles have been on roads that are dentists best friends i.e. they remove fillings and teeth faster than Mike Tyson without gloves. Anyway, I hope he can find it in his heart to forgive me, I know I have been ever so grateful for his rugged strength, makes me feel kind of insignificant really, after all, all I do is point him in the right direction (or wrong direction, but I don’t want to start a family argument with my excellent navigator)
