IHLA DE MOZAMBIQUE:
Should have known to avoid this as Tony Wheeler’s (Big Tony) Lonely Planet says “…one of Southern Africa’s most exotic attractions, shrouded in centuries of history, with a time-warp atmosphere and fascinating architecture…” I know it is a UN World Heritage Hovel, but I’m sorry Tony, you would swear that “Bomber Harris” had carpet bombed the whole lot in one of his thousand bomber raids. There is a LOT of work to be done and to cap it all the whole place reeks of human excrement whatever direction the wind is blowing from…. I suggest they start with the sewerage system, which I suspect the Portuguese overlooked in the 500 years from 1498 when Vasco De Gama the explorer (shame he wasn’t a plumber!) first landed. It would undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful cities in the world to a very short-sighted nasally challenged UNESCO representative, but they would probably be in a sparkling white Land Cruiser with tinted windows and the aircon on full to filter out any local smells.….they might as well have been in Wigan. (Not that I have anything against Wigan you understand….it has certain similarities…they both have piers although the one in Ihla seems to have collapsed)
I must qualify this a bit as I am a well known cultural desert and Clare really, really liked it (Not enough to take the peg off her nose though it probably smells a little better than my feet)
